Cinematography has its own genre-genre structure. Unlike other forms of art, the birth date of cinematography can be named absolutely precisely - December 28, 1895. It was on this day in Paris that the brothers O. and L. Lumiere demonstrated their first film program, which contained short documentary sketches: "The exit of workers from factories", "Arrival of the train", etc. The films of the Lumière brothers started the trend towards creating documentary cinema, because in all their pictures a certain immediacy of real reality was recorded.

Total Russification, suppression and destruction of Ukrainian culture, large-scale waves of arrests, dissident movement — all this characterizes the years of so-called "stagnation" in Soviet Ukraine. Ukrainian cinema was not recognized and banned by the then Soviet authorities. In those days, films appeared that became famous throughout the Soviet Union, but did you know that they were filmed in Ukrainian film studios? "Only "old men" go to battle" (1972), "D'Artagnan and the Three Musketeers" (1978), "The meeting place cannot be changed" (1979), "Adventures of Electronics" (1979), "A lonely woman wishes get to know each other" (1986).

A separate milestone of Ukrainian cinema is the screen adaptation of works of classical literature: "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors" (1964), "Ukraine on Fire" (1967), "Stone Cross" (1968), "Natalka Poltavka" (1978), "Black Council" (2000 ) etc. Such films primarily convey the Ukrainian flavor: scenery, picturesque landscapes of Ukrainian lands, language diversity. Films based on the motives, or completely based on the plots of the classical literary heritage, supposedly remind Ukrainians that literature is easily used on big screens. Although the films have been shot since the 60s of the 20th century, their popularity has not waned.
